Upper Extremity Exercises
UPPER EXTREMITY COORDINATION EXERCISES
Number of repetitions: _ 2__times a day
Shoulder
1. Shrug both shoulders up to your ears, and then push your shoulders downward.
2. Shrug one shoulder up to your ear and then push shoulder downward alternately shoulders.
3. Roll shoulders pushing forward, and then roll shoulder pulling backward.
(Give yourself a hug and then bring arms back and stick out chest like in the military)
Arm
1. Raise arms sideways and upward, clapping your hands together above your head. Repeat, bringing the back of your hands together. (Start with arms at side)
2. Lift your arms over your head alternately so that one is going up while the other is going down.
3. With arms out to the sides, raise them to shoulder level and then bring tips of your index fingers to touch the tip of your nose, alternating arms. (Looks like drunk driving test done by police)
4. Lift arms out sideways and upward to shoulder level then bring the tips of your index fingers together in front of you.
5. Place the palms of your hands behind your neck; then move your arms downward to place the backs of your hands against the lower part of your back, keeping your elbows bent.
6. Raise arms sideways, shoulder high; then move your arms in circles. Start with small circles and gradually increase the size. Circle forward and backward.
7. Start with arms straight at your side; raise them forward and upward above your head.
Wrist
1. Keep your upper arm at your sides. Move your hand upward as far as possible, then downward as far as possible. Repeat with the other wrist or do both at the same time.
2. Same as #1, except make a circle clockwise, then a circle counterclockwise.
Fingers
1. Place your palm flat on the table and raise and lower your fingers one by one. Put pressure on the fingers not being lifted to keep them down. Do each hand.
2. With all fingers together, spread the fingers wide apart and then bring them back together. Do each hand.
3. Make an "O" by touching your thumb to each fingertip, one at a time. Do each hand.
